This Day in History

On this day in history in 1633, Galileo Galilei arrived in Rome to begin his trial for heresy for proposing that the Earth orbits the sun. In 1992, he was formally and publicly cleared of wrongdoing. That's 359 years. However, the Church does not really move that slow. In 1822, they lifted the ban on the Galileo's work containing his theory. That's only 189 years.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect had intended for us to forgo their use. - Galileo Galilei
