Nonsense everlasting, plain and simple

From Penn Jillette's book, God, No!: Signs You May Already Be an Atheist and Other Magical Tales:

There is no god and that's the simple truth. If every trace of any single religion died out and nothing were passed on, it would never be created exactly that way again. There might be some other nonsense in its place, but not that exact nonsense. If all of science were wiped out, it would still be true and someone would find a way to figure it all out again.

Cleanup on aisle infinity

Some scientists think it's just an accidental byproduct of social cognition. They say humans evolved to imagine what other people are feeling, even people who aren't present — and from there it was a short step to positing supernatural beings.

Others argue that religion is too pervasive to be just a byproduct. Historically, at least, it must have provided believers and their communities some sort of advantage, or else it would have disappeared.

The argument breaks down into the so-called byproduct and adaptation camps. Of course, they might both be right.

* * *

The advantages of a Theory of Mind are clear. People who lack one are considered developmentally challenged, even disabled. Anthropologist Scott Atran, a proponent of the byproduct hypothesis, has suggested that it let our ancestors quickly distinguish between friends and enemies. And once humans were able to imagine someone who wasn't physically present, supernatural beliefs soon followed.
Interesting article about the herd mentality.

Happy Birthday, Chuck!

Two hundred years ago today, Chuck was born. Today, we acknowledge his humanity.

As the coordinating web site says, this day:

...expresses gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity, has contributed to the advancement of humanity.

So, happy birthday, Charles Darwin. Some of us are happy to stand in the light of inquiry with you. Those who spurn you as a poster boy will, as your theory beautifully explains, go the way of the dodo. That glorious day cannot come soon enough.

Science in Muslim Countries

Link: http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/sci;321/5890/745

It is fairly obvious that the izlamic culture has fallen a long way from their very respected perch of 1,000 years ago. They are the people who saved the knowledge of the Greeks. They had impressive achievements in mathematics, science, astronomy, medicine, architecture, music, and literature.

What are they doing today? Nothing of significance.

Why? Religion. The article sums up that part quite well.

The author makes a good start of pointing out that America is not immune. However, as was pointed out on another site, the author does not mention medical research with stem cells or evolution. Plus, America being the over-achieving people that they are, I suspect the America can reach the same level of stagnation in a third of the time.

Taking those three items together (creationism being the third if you did not read the article), it is apparent that America is in grave danger of sliding down the slippery slope to global pig ignorance. The fundamentalists in the US are just as revolting as the izlamic mullahs and they are need to be removed from the planet.

Religion has never been a proponent of thinking and knowledge. After all, their product is the unknowable. Look at Xianity: the curse of man stems from acquiring knowledge. Not surprising is that the whole episode has a sexual undercurrent.

It is amazing to me that an individual would make a conscious choice to resist their curiosity for discovering the wonders that exist out there just because someone (a someone who somehow managed to know the unknowable???) tells them that an invisible entity does not like it and they may not make it into a place where they will be stuck - forever - with like minded, pig ignorant schmucks like themselves.

A plea to the religious

The Earth needs your help. There is a startling theory that the core of our planet, our shared ship in the darkness, may be cooling down. It is also believed that this phenomenon happened to the planet Mars. We all like the Earth so here is a plan to help everyone.

As we all know from the masterwork of Geophysics and Earth Sciences, the bibble, the Xian Underworld of Hell is located within the Earth itself (one more reason for that Denier on The View to feel stupid about a flat earth). Obviously, there are not enough souls being tormented to keep the core warm. I have spoken with Satan and the other make-believe Overlords who run their respective Underworlds for all the respective religions and we all agree: please stop proselytizing. If you are not out there saving people for your religion, then more people will wind up in the Underworld and our toes and hooves can be nice and toasty again. So, please, keep your your yap shut and your faith a secret. Take it with you to your grave and save yourself. Once our scientists confirm that the core is healthy again, we will let you know so that you can start sharing again. We promise.

How can people this stupid exist? (Old news)

This is an older event but it popped into my head the other day so here it is.

One of the vile members of the estrogen-magnetic kaffeeklatsch The View made the comment that she was not sure that the Earth was round because she was too busy trying to take care of her kids. While we all appreciate her doing what she, as a parent, is supposed to do, we do take offense that she uses this as some kind of excuse for being as dumb as a rock. We all agree that the bible says that women are inferior to men but, gadzooks!, this hits the redline.

Dear              (and other flat-Earthers and Vapidoi):

The Earth is round. We have pictures of it, we have flown around it, our satellites orbit it, astronauts - even female astronauts, American and others - have peed themselves at its geometric beauty. When you are walking around the earth, looking up at the night sky, there is no one special step that makes the stars suddenly zip halfway across the sky. Nor will they change complete - different stars or suddenly there is the sun - which is what would happen if the Earth was a disc with a minor depth or completely two dimensional, respectively. We could not have subways or harvest natural resources without digging into someone's basement on the other side of the world. How can the oceans be so deep if the Earth is flat? This, you have difficulty believing. However, I'm sure that the invisible sky daddy has your full support - something that you have never seen, of which you have no picture, not one shred of proof exists in any form at all in three-, two-, or even one-dimension. Your ignorance is repulsive. Thank the FSM that your co-hens took you to task for it.

Fast-forward 357 years, and a day

On February 14, 1990, Voyager I looked back towards home and, over a span of 60 separate images, captured most of the members of our solar system family.

No invisible, crystal, celestial spheres were damaged in the taking of this photograph.

Sweet, sweet irony.

This Day in History

On this day in history in 1633, Galileo Galilei arrived in Rome to begin his trial for heresy for proposing that the Earth orbits the sun. In 1992, he was formally and publicly cleared of wrongdoing. That's 359 years. However, the Church does not really move that slow. In 1822, they lifted the ban on the Galileo's work containing his theory. That's only 189 years.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect had intended for us to forgo their use. - Galileo Galilei

Happy Darwin Day

Darwin Day expresses gratitude for the enormous benefits that scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity, has contributed to the advancement of humanity. Start planning now for next year's bicentennial. It is going to kick ass!

Today also is Abraham Lincoln's birthday so you have two reasons to celebrate.

My UFO Theory

Es gibt sehr einfact zu verstehen: sic enim dilexit Deus mundum ut Filium suum unigenitum daret ut omnis qui credit in eum non pereat sed habeat vitam aeternam. To the other inhabited worlds in the universe, he gave superior intellect, advanced civilization, and deep space travel technology. Then, in a sort of Scared Straight type of program, they come to Earth.
